Hayes: Quandry at receiver
Written by Todd Smith.
Reggie Hayes notes that aside from Austin Collie, the proven receivers are free agents:
Wide receiver: Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon and Anthony Gonzalez are now free agents. Wayne wants to come back but may price himself too high for the Colts to make a deal. Garcon reportedly wants look around before deciding on whether to come back or not. Gonzalez, meanwhile, found himself on the outside looking in during the last couple of seasons under the Polians' regime.
Ha. Just realized it's the reverse, "Quandry" Ismail. Guy's been out of the league like 10 years and I still have that mental block. You might say I...call him Ismail.
Garcon has to be the priority, given has age, his speed etc. Gonzo barely saw the field and I never heard why. Collie's just better in the slot? Reggie and Garcon stayed healthy and made plays. With better play at the QB position might we have seen more 4 and 5 wide sets, and thus more Gonzo?
@matt_has In my mind Garçon is a no-brainer--bring him back if he's affordable. He's young enough to play with Luck, experienced enough for Manning. He's not a #1 but he's a weapon (even with the occasional brick hands). I'd love Wayne back if Manning's under center. No Manning? No Wayne. That means you're definitely looking for a receiver however.
@coltsauth_todd I was thinking the same think about PG, his sheer determination, muscle and blocking cancel out the brick hands ... which are becoming more rare.
My hesitation was that he seems to have faded as the season went on ...but at this point I'm nit picking?
One of the silver linings of this past season is that Garcon has become a more reliable receiver. The drops have mostly disappeared. He's no #1, but now is a solid #2 and Collie is explosive as a slot receiver with Manning under center, probably Luck too.
@matt_has It's not like he got many well-thrown balls either. The only problem is he'll demand more money of Indy than he would a warm weather team.
