Colts fire two assistants

Written by Todd Smith on .

The Colts have fired Pete Metzelaars and Frank Reich according to Bob Kravitz:

Offensive line coach Pete Metzelaars and wide receivers coach Frank Reich were released today a source with knowledge of the situation said.

Those moves are likely to be followed by others on the coaching staff after head coach Jim Caldwell was fired on Tuesday.

Colts general manager Ryan Grigson said during the announcement of Caldwell’s firing that he wanted to sit down and speak in person with each of the assistants.

That didn’t happen with Metzelaars, who was out of town, as are most of the assistant coaches.

The Metzelaars move surprises me as the offensive line took a step forward (figuratively and literally) this year under his guidance.  The running game improved and despite significant injuries performed pretty well in pass protection later in the year.

Good luck to both men!

Yeah, seems like it would be cool to keep that guy around, but I would rather the New coach bring in his own guys.

@paulcareyjr Sounds like that's the thought.

Sad that Pete, who played college ball at Wabash, is caught up in the mess though. I really appreciated that he did a pretty good job despite being asked to fill the big hole left by Howard Mudd. Mudd is a legend and Pete did quite nicely in his absence.
