Without official word on the short- or long-term futures of Gary Brackett and Ernie Sims, the signing of former Detroit Lions linebacker Caleb Campbell leaves fans to wonder. The good news for the immediate future of the two veteran linebackers is that Campbell has simply replaced wide receiver Chris Brooks on the Colts practice squad at this point. Still, it seems like a precautionary move that could develop further if either player does not receive positive results from team doctors or is projected to have long-term rehabilitation. Campbell joins the Colts after a pretty amazing background story. He played on Army in college and entered the league via the 2008 draft (seventh round) only to be called to active duty before he could take the field. He returned to the Lions in 2010 but eventually was released and landed back in free agency. At 6-foot 2-inches tall and 237 pounds, he is big for the Colts linebacker corps and tape on him suggest he uses that size to lay big hits on his targets.
