[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="580" caption="Reggie Wayne wants to be catching passes from Painter? Puzzling."] supported Curtis Painter this year, the recent comments by Reggie Wayne were stunning to read. Wayne is a staunch supporter of Painter, and even called Kerry Collins a "step back."[/caption] Apparently, Reggie Wayne is not a big Kerry Collins fan. Who knew? While we've reported before that Colts' offensive players have
“(The Colts front office) needs to do what they need to do I guess. I’ll tell you one thing. I’m letting it all hang out for Painter. Like I said before training camp, I’m a Painter fan. I’m going to do what I’ve got to do to make Painter look good.” “We don’t even know (Collins). We ain’t vanilla, man, we ain’t no simple offense. So for him to can come in here and be the starter, I don’t see it. I think that’s a step back. Who says Kerry’s going be the starter (against Houston if Manning can’t play)?” "I don't care who you are, I mean I'm not going to let anyone just come in here and just push someone (like Painter) aside like you're that dog now, you know what I mean?" "I don’t want to make it seem like I’m not welcoming or having open arms to anybody that comes to our organization. If they open the doors for Kerry Collins to come, then that’s fine. I can’t do (anything) about that anyways. But I’ll be damned if we’re going to open the doors for someone else, and just drop our heads on who we already have. The Colts are big on protecting their own, so I’m (going to) help protect our own."Woah. It's one thing to support your teammates, but this goes far beyond that. These are very strong words about Painter, and Collins, that I would not have expected whatsoever. Painter has looked terrible in every sense of the word, whereas Collins is a seasoned veteran who saved the Titans seasons after the Vince Young debacle. Remember, Painter has eight career completions and a rating of 9.8. Collins has over 3,000 career completions and a rating of 73.9. I'd say Collins is the starter. But, all that aside, it's amazing to me the support Painter has gotten from his receivers in the past few weeks. Especially considering that they usually receive passes from Peyton Manning. Dallas Clark also expounded on the comments we posted Tuesday, saying:
"Obviously Peyton is a bigger name and all that, so [his neck surgery] draws a little more attention. And the beauty of this thing is you got a guy [QB Curtis Painter] who's stepping in ready to make plays and lead this team."I don't get it. These guys know that this is Curtis Painter they're talking about right? Wayne's comments especially are astounding to me, I'm not quite sure what to make of them. I can't imagine how Painter has managed to garner up this much support from his teammates, I mean, he's never looked good in actual game situations, and Collins may give the Colts a chance to win without Peyton Manning (not a good one, but certainly better than Painter). I am really just confused right now. In other practice news, here is the injury report from Wednesday's practice:
Sitting out Wednesday's practice were S Antoine Bethea (hamstring), S Al Afalava (groin), LB Cody Glenn (neck), CB Chris Rucker (hamstring), TE Mike McNeill (shoulder), WR Anthony Gonzalez (hamstring), TE Brody Eldridge (knee), LB Gary Brackett (elbow) and WR Austin Collie (foot). It's disconcerting to see Collie hurt again, now it's his foot. I don't how he injured the foot, or how serious it is, but the Colts need him on the field come September 11. Especially if Manning isn't playing. Gonzo just needs to get reps on the field. I know it's just practice, but if neither of those receivers play against the Packers this week, my frustration level is going to rise very quickly. Check out Tom James' Rapid Reports for more Colts quotes regarding the signing of Kerry Collins. Most of it was pretty standard, scripted stuff. What do you think about Wayne's comments?
