This morning, the Colts announced that they have signed defensive end Lawrence Guy, who spent much of last season and the 2013 preseason with Indianapolis, as well as offensive tackle Xavier Nixon, an undrafted rookie who was on the Washington Redskins practice squad. (continued after the jump)
From the team’s press release:
Guy, 6-4, 318 pounds, rejoins the Colts after being waived by the team following the preseason finale against Cincinnati. He spent the 2012 season with Indianapolis after being signed from the Green Bay practice squad on September 3, 2012. Guy totaled 21 tackles (15 solo) and 1.0 sack in nine games played. He was originally selected by the Packers in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft, but spent his rookie season on the Injured Reserve list.
Nixon, 6-6, 314 pounds, was originally signed by Washington as an undrafted free agent on May 2, 2013. He was waived by the Redskins on August 31, 2013 before being signed to the team’s practice squad the following day. Nixon appeared in 46 games (33 starts) on the University of Florida offensive line. As a senior in 2012, he earned All-SEC honors after playing 11 games with eight consecutive starts at left tackle. In 2009, Nixon was part of a Florida offense that ranked No. 3 in the nation in yards per carry (5.59), yards per play (6.97) and total yards (6,410), earning him freshman All-America recognition from CollegeFootballNews.com and a selection to the SEC All-Freshman Team.
This may not be a good sign for the availability of DE Ricky Jean Francois, who is day to day with a groin injury, or C Samson Satele, who is still nursing an elbow injury.
Stay tuned. Two players will have to be cut or placed on IR later today to make room on the 53-man roster. Tough choices may be on the way in Indy.
Update 2:40 EDT: The Colts released WR Da' Rick Rogers and RB/KR Kerwynn Williams to make room on the roster for Guy and Nixon. Rogers was an undrafted player with great measurables and upside (but attitude problems), and Williams was one of the team's two seventh round draft picks, brought on to be a dynamic kick returner. No word yet on whether either player may be headed back to the practice squad.
The good news is, no one was placed on injured reserve. Also, seeing Rogers go, while disappointing, may mean the health of Indy's top three receivers has improved (Wayne, Heyward-Bey, and Hilton were all on the injury report at some point last week).
Hope it doesn´t mean Ricky Jean-François will be lost for a few games. What would the rotation be like in the base defense if that were the case, though? Who slides inside? Because apparently that´s not Guy´s skillset.
Good points on the update. The way we were going after the first two games, we would have had 24 starters on IR by the end of the season.
Seriously though, the NFL is truly a game of attrition. Every team is going to lose players each week, some for a few weeks, some for the year. That's why we should really appreciate the way Grigs is always trying to improve the bottom of the roster. Eventually, those guys get in games.
No roster cuts announced yet??? Anybody else smell another out of left field deal my the mad trader Grigson? How many exclamation points on Irsay's twitter post this time???
Wild trade speculation: Donald Brown, he does not fit the new Colts power running identity, even though lots of folks say running backs are a dime a dozen their are a bunch of teams that are dying for a competent RB, like the NYGs. NYGs either get a RB who can hold on to the football or Eli is going to get killed.
LaVon Brazill, if you can not see him on the roster for week 5, either trade him or you are going to have to cut somebody else. Otherwise if David Reed who has not been healthy to by waived.
I saw the headline and tried to figure out if DeLawrence Guy was related to DeMaurice Smith,... then realized it was DE Lawrence Guy. Way too early in the morning to be reading important stuff like this so I better get back to work for a while until I am thinking clearly. THEN I can read NFL stuff....
I am not too worried about these roster moves for the Jags game (as fans we can overlook inferior opponents, even if the players may not), but I will worry if RJF is not on the field the next few weeks after the Jags. That's a tough stretch.
@Kyle Rodriguez So you won't be too sad if David Reed bobbles some kick returns?
With a name like Da'Rick you just know he has been practicing his endzone celebration.
One can only hope.
I know. I was thinking of sending you some condolences when they cut Da'Rick.
Hopefully he doesn't end up, say, in Tennessee, developing into their next (or first?) great receiver.
@Kyle Rodriguez That's random. Why? And who's Imma?
@thellamajockey Wow, with Bradshaw's injury history and T-Rich's newness, not sure we have the luxury of trading Donald, but I covet one of the Giants draft picks, which will be high in whatever round; they're horrid so far this year. Be nice to get a high 3rd or 4th for him, depending on how desperate a team is, since his true trade market value is lower (in the absence of a desperate suitor).
Typos are a side effect of really nasty head colds.
With Delano Howell playing so well on Sunday, do we really need Josh Gordy, Larry Assante and/or Sergio Brown?
Kerwynn Williams, either let the kid play or put him back to the PS. Please don't let T.Y. Hilton get hurt returning kicks if Williams could do the job.
@Bobman1 DeLawrence actually sounds like a cool name, until you realize how much it sounds like Delores (ouch). Plus, if I knew a DeLawrence, I'd always be calling him DeLarry.
The cuts they did end up making are probably good news about RB and WR positional health.
Expect Brown will not be back next year. I thought that if Kerwynn Williams had shown anything the first three games Brown would be on the trading block.
If TRich turns out to be the milch cow, I still think Brown could be traded.
The NYG however could out of it in week or two.
@thellamajockey Well, it looks like you called it on Williams. They also let Da'Rick go, which hopefully means we won't see our three top receivers on the injury report henceforth.
@thellamajockey they sure seem committed to Reed. I wouldn't bet against you on that though.
I expect WR/KR David Reed to get his chance this weekend. If he does not impress I bet he will get cut to make room for LaVon Brazill.
Williams for all his draft expectations, has yet to show anything as a kick returner.
Once TRich is up to speed I still would not be surprised if Donald Brown gets traded before the deadline. There are just too many teams who need a RB. I doubt they will resign Brown. Colts could bring back Delone Carter or reup Kerwynn Williams.
Yes, having a daughter, I worked hard to make sure we picked out a name that didn't sound too natural with "appearing nightly" after it AND didn't rhyme with any part of any kind of anatomy, lol. It's surprisingly difficult.
