52 out of 53 isn't bad. I am shocked they cut Nevis. He was solid in the 3-4 last year before his injury and was doing fine again this preseason. How he didn't make it over Mathews is beyond me.
Maybe it's just me, but I think the articles on this site could be so much easier to read with a little formatting work. Change the font to something a little thinner and group things together a little more. I'm not saying it needs a major overhaul, but some minor changes could be huge in the readability of some of the best Colts analysis out there!
Ricardo Mathews is a sold journeyman defensive lineman but with not of lots of "sexy" upside left to be discovered. I think he will make the initial 53 man roster but still could get cut in the week one waiver wire scramble in favor of a more raw talent. Still I really hope Mathews gets stashed on the proverbial "Couch Squad" only to reappear when, as always happens, other players get hurt. I think that is how Ricardo made the Colts' roster in the first place a couple of years ago. Mathews stuck onto the team last year because we had a lot of nicked up D-Linemen.
Mentioned this to Gary Brackett last night on the Colts Endzone show after Ricardo Mathews' name had already came up. Brackett pointed out that just like the show "Hard Knocks" there are literally hundreds of talented cut players who are never more than a phone call away from playing in the NFL.
QB: Andrew Luck, Matt Hasselbeck /RB: Ahmad Bradshaw, Vick Ballard, Donald Brown, Kerwynn Williams /FB: Stanley Havili /WR: Reggie Wayne, Darrius Heyward-Bey, T.Y. Hilton, Griff Whalen, David Reed /TE: Dwayne Allen, Coby Fleener, Dominique Jones /OT: Anthony Castonzo, Gosder Cherilus, Jeff Linkenbach, Joe Reitz /OG: Donald Thomas, Hugh Thornton, Mike McGlynn /OC: Samson Satele, Khaled Holmes
NT: Aubrayo Franklin, Josh Chapman /DE: Ricky Jean Francois, Cory Redding, Drake Nevis, Lawrence Guy, Montori Hughes /OLB: Robert Mathis, Erik Walden, Bjoern Werner, Caesar Rayford /ILB: Jerrell Freeman, Kelvin Sheppard, Kavell Conner, Pat Angerer, Mario Harvey /CB: Vontae Davis, Greg Toler, Darius Butler, Cassius Vaughn, Marshay Green /S: LaRon Landry, Antoine Bethea, Delano Howell, Joe Lefeged
Practice Squad 8:
QB Chandler Harnish, RB Robert Hughes, OLB Monte Simmons, OL Emmett Cleary, OL Ben Ijalana, S Larry Asante, TE Justice Cunningham, TE Daniel Odongo
Hard to see Delano Howell not making this team. Lefeged never saw the field this preseason.
Dominique Jones has earned a spot, as well IMO.
Regardless, some good football players are going to get cut, or traded. I'm sure Grigsy isn't getting much sleep.
@WyattL 4 TEs and a dedicated FB, not likely.
@WyattL I think Justice Cunningham bested Dominique Jones, but its close. Normally, 4 TEs on the roster would be standard, with one of them being a designated "Heavy" TE tasked with specialised goal line, "FB" and blocking duties. With a dedicated true FB roster spot I can't see a 4th TE.
If the Cincy game taught us anything, it's that after our 3rd CB, we get bad real fast. If Vaughn starts, even at nickel, we're in trouble. I think Guy outplayed Hughes, but you're probably right about upside. If we're keeping Williams, is there really a need for Reed (or vice versa)? I'd love to keep Ijalana over an extra RB or WR.
Has Lefeged been healthy enough in preseason to make the 53? Or have the Colts simply been resting him because they know what they got in Lefeged? Is Lefeged cursed/blessed with the Bob Sander's gene, where he practices too rough for his own good and that of his teammates? What about Delano Howell and/or Larry Assante over Brown? But then again Howell it appears can at least still qualify for the PS. Remember Howell is another Stanford man.
@thellamajockey I like Howell or Asante over Brown. Asante seems to have a nose for the ball. Special teams gunner is only thing Brown has ever been good at for the Colts. Now we have a couple guys who can actually play safety fighting for his spot
Hey check this out - SI put Luck as 10th best QB in the league...
Not sure Gordy makes it over Green. Also hoping Cleary makes the team as he has more upside than McGlynn. Sergio Brown is in trouble too. Asante may be in his spot. It will be interesting.
@Heshdog33 yeah not feeling Gordy... even if he makes it, he could get cut for someone on waivers easily.
@Heshdog33 Green didn't do himself any favors last night.
@Heshdog33 I wish that they'd keep Cleary and cut McGlynn, but apparently that has no chance of happening. Sadface.
