I won't lie. I haven't watched more than the first minute or so of any of them yet.
I think Geno is just glad he didn't have to join Rex Ryan's circus. When the jets were on the clock, they put the camera on Smith, and he looked to be full of dread and disgust. I was cracking up. Then again, I'm a bit sleep deprived.
Seriously liking Werner more and more. Played a lot of down DE, but Colts multiple front plays so much nickle that he may be a 2-down rusher with Walden in on 3-4 downs to play the run.
Huh. Despite my disappointment at not nabbing my man crush Datone Jones, I'm beginning to think the Werner pick will work out okay. Not sexy by any stretch, nor exciting, but dammit, he was graded higher than Jones or Carradine and looks like he might turn into that sleeper pick that everyone went "WTF?" over but ended up being solid.
The more I read, the more I think Indy will be fine with him on the team. I stopped worrying about being excited or disappointed at picks a long time ago anyway when I realized my two "Meh" reactions in the early 2000s were for Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark. And my excitement in late 2000s were over all the linemen including Mike freakin' Pollak.
He reads like he'll fit. And he had some high grades. Last time we saw someone slide because of some knock like "too slow", that guy was Dwayne Allen. And I don't think anyone regrets that pick now (never me; I was excited as hell over him sliding to Indy, thinking he was actually the best TE of that draft). Forget his 40; it's an overrated stat anyway. As long as Werner solidifies the defense, I think he'll go down as being a success. We'll find out soon enough.
I was watching tape of Carradine and noticed Werner was creating sacks that Carradine was cleaning up.
I'm having trouble being excited about the pick, but if he can pass rush and improve the front 7, then I'll be happy to have him.
I just don't know anything about him; that's the problem. :(
@Cody Dart NFL.com went the same way. Both of them said Long.
@Coltsheadben He might even be more flexible. I noted that both Rang and Walterfootball singled out his run stopping, and FFToolbox did the same. Sports Illustrated wrote him up with "A dominant player against OL run blocks, Werner defeats block on run to his side and has a burst to ball to finish play." And I'd quote ESPN if I didn't have to pay to see it. >:-(
My point is I'm seeing scouting reports saying he can handle both the edge rush and the run defense. If that's the case, this might be an underrated prospect they found. Of course, it all shakes out on the field, so I can't pass judgement until we've seen a body of NFL level work. But as far as promise goes, he seems to have a lot of it.
@AJ_ 4 sacks vs Murray St, 1 vs Savannah St, 1.5 vs Wake Forrest, 1.5 vs Miami, 3.5 vs Florida, 1.5 vs Maryland, I watched the Miami game and he did nothing for the majority of the game.
He only had more than 4 tackles only twice the whole season and those are group, only had more than 2 solo tackles in 4 games this year, no forced fumbles, no interceptions.
This is just stats to go along with what I saw on tape, just looking at the numbers Florida was his best game, but the tape of it is not on youtube, I will try to see if I can find it on ESPN tomorrow and give it a look, but really not too impressed... I suggest watching the tape on this guy and judging for yourself, and that is for everyone.
@Cody Dart No
@paulcareyjr EJ Manual called. He said hi!
@AJ_ he can't pass rush, it was a wasted pick
@BDiddy Not as egregious as the Brady Quinn debacle, though.
@BDiddy Would think it has to be Floyd
@BDiddy Or Minnesota, remember they let their guy go as well..
@Cody Dart I don't quite see it.
@AJ_ Can hardly call him underrated, saw him as a top-10 pick just a couple months ago. You can tell Grigson believes in him, and I like a lot of what I see on tape. Dunno about the standing up, but again, we play a lot of four-man front still.
@BDiddy Well we all knew they were going QB though, the had nothing at that position, but I will say 2nd worst just to satisfy that other bad pick, almost makes me not want to watch the rest of the draft...
@paulcareyjr Huh? He ranked 3rd in sacks last year. No offense, but I'm having trouble reconciling your cynicism with that stat.
@Cody Dart I hope it's a good comparison. Long's a fine player. I think Werner would've been a much higher pick if not for his combine numbers, which, IMO, just prove he sucks at track and field.
@MarcusDugan I mean if I HAVE to pick someone to compare him to to, its a descent comparison....
@paulcareyjr @Coltsheadben Well... I'm starting to watch the highlights vids Marcus posted, and against NC State he's not looking bad at all. I guess I'm not seeing what you're seeing yet, although I have to warn that I've only began. I haven't watched a whole lot yet.
Don't get me wrong; I appreciate that you've studied this and drawn a conclusion from personal observation. I'm just having a really hard time trying to figure out why you're so down on him when just about every scouting report I've read was high, and some even predicting him in the top 10. Can they be wrong? Of course they can. But I've yet to read an assessment that agrees with you, plus so far I'm not seeing the same thing in the NC State highlights (although, again, I've only watched a couple of minutes of it so far. But even taking that as a caveat, he looks reasonably quick, has pretty good arm technique, and isn't getting shoved around).
The only criticism I can agree with is the note that he motors down when the action isn't towards his side of the field. While accurate, that's correctable.
True, I might just be seeing a good game. You've apparently watched more video than I have. But I'm a little taken aback that the very first bit of video I've watched - admittedly very little - hasn't backed up so cynical a pronouncement. I'm still watching, though. You may indeed turn out to be right.
@AJ_ Wonderful, but for me his tape was not that good, he rushed vs RT, and is stiff in the hips, NFL LT's will eat him up, he did not play explosive to me but that is my view. If you plan to play him at Waldens spot then he is horrible against the run, he gets blocked right out of the way and does not hold the edge, his stiff hips also are going to be a problem in coverage, so this why I think it was a wasted pick, we could have traded back and got more value than we did with that pick
