After an emotional morning at the Colts complex with the news regarding Coach Pagano’s illness, a few business matters were attended to in order to prepare for Sunday’s game against Green Bay.
The Colts have elevated center A.Q. Shipley from the practice squad by signing him back onto the active roster. In order to open a spot for Shipley, the Colts have waived outside linebacker Mario Addison. They also replaced cornerback D.J. Johnson with Marshay Green on the practice squad.
A.Q. Shipley (6’1”, 309) was with the Colts during training camp and was active for the week 1 game against Chicago but was waived when the team signed veteran OG Trai Essex. He has spent the interim on the practice squad and his signing today hints at a few things. Perhaps Satele’s injury is looking more significant than the Colts had hoped and/or the Colts really have no intention of re-signing Essex (as I had speculated last week). Either way, he provides depth on the line and I would not expect him to start until we hear otherwise.
In a bit of a surprising move, the Colts have waived 2nd-year player Mario Addison who really looked the part in the pre-season, having amassed 13 tackles and 3 sacks and playing a significant role.
Since the regular season started, my hopes for Addison, and furthermore our OLB depth, have been quelled. Sadly, there has been a lack of pressure witnessed during the first 3 weeks of regular game action. Even with Dwight Freeney sidelined since early in the Chicago game, Addison only managed to appear on the stat sheet in the form of 2 tackles. Hopefully, this speaks to the improving health of Freeney, and to a lesser degree, Angerer. Also, the move likely means that Justin Hickman shows more potential than Addison. I’ve gotten the sense the team would be comfortable with Mario Harvey as a situational pass rusher in a pinch on the outside. My initial reaction was that Addison could be practice squad-bound, but since he appeared in 7 games last season between the Bears and Colts, he no longer has eligibility.
Lastly, the Colts have signed Marshay Green (5’9”, 180) to the practice squad and bid adieu to D.J. Johnson. Johnson had actually initially made the active 53-man roster out of camp after arriving via trade, but they must see more potential with Green. Green went undrafted out of Ole Miss in the 2010 NFL Draft and was signed by the Arizona Cardinals. He spent time on the practice squad and active roster for the Cardinals in both 2010 and 2011 but only appeared in 1 game. Known as more of a returner than a defender coming out in the draft, he did turn heads at Ole Miss as an athlete, playing WR his first 2 years and then starting at CB his last 2 seasons.
Stay tuned for at least 1 more update on the roster this week, as they will likely look to fill the open practice squad spot.
Hmmm. I'm not sure Addison should have been the first LB to let go. Still, hoping for Dwight to return.
@bradicus18 I think it's safe to assume that Dwight will play next week. Everyone got so excited about Addison playing against arena level linemen, he's not a good NFL player.
