Breaking News: Colts place RB Donald Brown and FB Robert Hughes on IR, sign RBs Karim and Moore

Written by Greg Cowan on .

The Indianapolis Colts announced today that they've placed RB Donald Brown and FB Robert Hughes on the Injured-Reserved list, ending both of their seasons. To fill their spots - and the gaping hole at running back - the Colts signed two players who were with them earlier this year, RBs Deji Karim and Mewelde Moore.

There's been no update on RB Vick Ballard, who suffered a stinger during Sunday's game, or RB Delone Carter, who suffered an ankle injury, but we assume -barring another injury to Ballard - that Moore and Karim will be little more than insurance for the rest of the season.

As for Brown, we are now left to wonder whether the much-maligned former 1st-round pick has played his last game for the Colts. Underrated and under appreciated, Brown was never able to showcase his speed and quickness behind an offensive line that allowed far too much penetration and provided too few holes for a speedy RB such as Brown to succeed.

We'll update the story as more information becomes available.

I've got a question,

Grigson played pro-ball didn't he.  If he did, does anyone know if he as a player was ever IR ed ?

Just asking.  Because he really is very quick, I believe to IR players especially front line ones.

I understand the business aspect of the game, but sometimes you have to wait for players to heal, that are important to the success of the team.

@jpz2 He played pro football for a few years but also had his career end prematurely due to a back injury.

@Payton Yes, Grigson pro career ended in Canada with a back injury.

But before the CFL he was IR ed by the Lions in 1995 according to Colts.com when he was introduced to the organization.  Just saying.

Brown the bust has just popped!  So the excuse was that he could only run if nobody was around him---hmmmmm--  I sing great in the shower too.  He  was in the wrong sport --not physical!   But he leads in league in east -west yards.  Hurt for more games than he played.  Bust!

@Blue@Heart Since drafted in 2009, and counting the rest of this year, which he'll miss, Brown will have played in 50 of a possible 64 games.  Yes, hurt for more games than he played.

Played! Heck he was benched, beat out by a rookie, who then fumbled Brown back into playing-dropped critical passes,  and could not block the wind.  Put him on your fanasy team!

Let the Brown hating begin.  I liked Brown and he was part of some big wins.  Running behind such a crappy OL should not be held against him.

@buymymonkey You're right, but it'll be held against him anyway. Fans can be irrational.

I know we needed to replace Brown and Hughes, but jesus did we really need to sign Mewelde Moore? He was shit as a RB and as a pass blocker earlier this year. Is it that important that we get someone who knows the scheme and plays versus someone who can learn them but might not suck?

@Payton Yep, totally agree.  I hope he is just insurance, and that he plays in back of Karim.

@Payton How about grabbing Brandon Jacobs from the 49rs?

@buymymonkey  @Payton Kidnap him?  They'd have to release him, and make it to us via waiver wire.

As far a Brown, I never understood why the Colts didn't try to get him in the open field more often.  Maybe he didn't have the hands.

@buymymonkey @smonroe @Payton To ensure the kidnapping remained a success and that his identity remained a secret, he'd have to keep his helmet on at all times...and not throw it into the stands or anything like that.
