Alfonzo Dennard is a physical corner who excelled in press coverage at Nebraska though struggled when asked to play off in the Senior Bowl. Dennard was a good cover corner in both man and zone coverage in college. Going into his senior season he was considered by some a better prospect than teammate Prince Amukamara, but after missing the first 3 games of the season with an injury he next got his stock back on track.
2008 (Freshman): STs player
2009 (Soph): 20 tackles, 3 for loss, 8 pass breakups
2010 (Junior): 18 tackles, 1 fumble forced, 4 INTs, 7 pass breakups
2011 (Senior): 26 tackles, 6 pass breakups
40 yard dash: 4.55 seconds
Vertical Jump: 37 inches
Broad Jump: 10 feet, 1 inch
Dennard was successful in both man and zone coverage at a strong level of competition. He has a physical playstyle and the bulk to back it up at over 200lbs on a 5'10" frame.
Dennard had trouble when not allowed to jam a WR at the line and might not have the speed to stay with WRs deep. He might cross the line from physical into grabby, leading to flags and had one major lapse of on the field composure. In his final game Dennard gave up several big plays to Alshon Jeffery before the pair were ejected for fighting in the 3rd quarter.
Health Check, by Laura Calaway:
Dennard’s injury history includes a shoulder injury in 2009, a concussion in 2010, and a pulled leg muscle in 2011 that kept him out from summer camp through the first three games of the season. The shoulder injury is widely reported to have simply "hampered" Dennard throughout 2009, but registered 31 and 27 tackles in 2010 and 2011 respectively. It appears that he has fully recovered from the other injuries, but his shoulder may be one to watch.
More like if he fell to the 3rd round which I think he has a chance to do, that 4.55 speed may suck for him at the next level some, his cover skills should probably help but he will occasionally need safety help over the top. I see him going mid 2nd round.
If the Colts do not take a CB in the 2nd early, or do not sign a guy through free agency such a Tracy Porter, then I could see them possibly trading up to the mid second to target Dennard.
@NateDunlevy would be awesome if he fell to the #Colts in the 2nd round. He is a big imposing corner #Huskers
