Roster Move: Colts Cut QB Trevor Vittatoe, Have Open Roster Spot

Written by Kyle J. Rodriguez on .

Yesterday, the Colts cut QB David Legree and signed RB Mewelde Moore. Today, the Colts announced the release of another UDFA quarterback, Trevor Vittatoe.

This leaves the Colts with Andrew Luck, Drew Stanton, and Chandler Harnish at the quarterback position. The Colts will likely carry three quarterbacks into the season, since they no longer have ironman Peyton Manning at the helm. It was widely assumed that Vittatoe and Legree would get cut before the season, and likely before training camp, with the veteran Stanton on the roster and the Colts using a draft choice on Harnish. However, with Luck in school and Harnish injured, the Colts needed arms for OTAs and mini-camp.

The Colts have yet to sign anybody to fill the open roster spot, and will likely be looking for cheap, low risk veteran free agents to fill out the 90 man roster.

What do you think the odds are of Harnish making the 53? I don't see the logic of carrying a #3 QB, especially if he's a rookie or they think the roster is solid everywhere else. I'm guessing PS.

@smonroe I wouldn't be surprised if Harnish made it. A lot of teams carry three quarterbacks, and the Colts have no *proven* NFL starter on the team. Personally, I'd agree with you, but I would guess that Harnish has a good chance of being on the roster.

@Kyle Rodriguez you're probably right, but I just can't find the logic. Obviously, he won't play so he won't be trade bait anytime soon. If Luck is injured we'll pick up a vet to back up Stanton. Best scenario is Luck is an ironman ala Peyton and Harnish is our Sorgi for the next ten or so years.
