Ijalana Waived, OT Ty Nsekhe Signed

Written by Kyle J. Rodriguez on .

And so, a promising young lineman's career is over before it even began: the Colts have cut second year player from Villanova Ben Ijalana.

Ijalana was the second round draft pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, someone who possibly would be a bookend with Anthony Castonzo for years. Unfortunately, Ijalana tore his ACL in his left knee during Week 4 of the 2011 season. After a year of recovering, Ijalana was cleared to practice shortly before the 2012 training camp

After just a day of no-contact drills, Ijalana tore the ACL in his left knee once again, ending his season. With two subsequent ACL tears, and now being waived, his career is in jeopardy. We wish him the best in his fight to sustain a career in the NFL.

Because Ijalana was waived/injured, he will be reverted to the Colts' injured reserve list if he is not claimed by another team.

To fill the vacated roster spot, the Colts signed tackle Ty Nsekhe, a former Arena Football League player from 2010-2012. Nsekhe is 6-8 and 325 pounds, and will likely play offensive tackle.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the advantage to the Colts of outright waiving Ijalana, instead of just placing him on IR?

@DougEngland When does his contract stop being counted against the cap?
