2012 Mock Draft Board UPDATE BPA Mock Draft

Written by Brett Mock on .

Every off-season, fans join in with experts to come up with their best idea of how the upcoming draft will turn out. Some try to pick for every team, effectively prognosticating the entire draft outcome, while others will focus just on the picks of their favorite team.

No matter which method is used, very few of the picks end up being right for the vast majority of those who make predictions. What follows, then, is a hybrid of which players I think should be on the Colts radar for each of their given picks based on a player's value to Indianapolis and their likelihood to be around for the given pick. Those players listed higher at each pick are less likely to be around and offer higher value. Those listed lower are more likely to be around, still offer value, and might be more realistic.

Add Ladarius Green TE, UL-Lafayette to the 5th round options. I think he has a ton of upside and would be great value in the mid rounds. He is very tall, 6'6", and athletic, 4.48 40-yard dash, but he is somewhat of a project, though I think he has the talent to be a very productive starting TE with the proper coaching and development.

How about the UT rejects, Bryce Brown RB, and Janzen Jackson S, I think both of these guys have a ton of potential and would take a risk taking them in the late rounds, Brown, had showed a lot of potential before the incident of his transfer situation. Jackson a little undersized but is a good player who got in trouble for a stupid prank that he had no business being involved in.

Not to invade this post, but a couple of players I would add: TE Kevin Koger (7th round), DE Jaye Howard (4th-5th), DE Malik Jackson (6th-7th).

Plus, I really like Adcock as a late round guy. Not an elite starter or anything, but he just seems like the kind of guy who sticks at least as a backup who can play 3 positions and ends up with 3-5 starts a year. There is a chance that he is a solid RT or OG as well.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder if the top needs aren't something like "TE-WR-G" after the first round; I think at every point in the draft, we take the best at these three positions. I know CB is a HUGE need-- probably second after TE-- but I also think that protecting and providing for luck is priority #1. Also, I don't think that this front office would be dumb enough to not pick a CB or NT who was clearly superior to the talent at those three positions. But I think we could see rounds 5-7 include at least one interior lineman and probably a WR and TE even if we already have drafted at those positions.

Hey Colts Fans I recently wrote an article about the Top Ten Colts Players. Read it HERE. Comment, Criticize, tell me where I went wrong lol!

Don't the Colts have two 6th round picks?

coltsauthority

Note that I'm aware of. Our sixth round pick now is lower due to a trade with Philly for Winston Justice. Our other sixth round pick was dealt to the Jets for Drew Stanton and an additional seventh round pick. @smarter than nate

Colts signed brandon mckinney DT from BAL/SD... any one have any thoughts on this signing? He has some experience but not much playing time being behind Ngata and Cody. Either way if they're planning on a hybrid scheme, I assume the NT need drops off to at least the 5th round for a developmental player?

coltsauthority
coltsauthority moderator

McKinney is a bit of a mystery because his production has not been that great to this point in this career. Backing up guys like Ngata, Cody, and San Diego's Williams is not surprising because they are all extremely talented players. What we do know is that Pagano is very familiar with him and he brought him onto the team knowing he could be asked to start in 3-4 lineups.

Production aside, he has been considered a solid player when asked to contribute. He is at a point in his career that his physical skills should be at their highest. Whether he can make the most of them is unknown and getting another NT somehow will still remain a priority. @Westhoff

Michael Egnew, TE. projected 3-4 rounds.

Tommy Streeter, WR. projected to go 5-6 rounds. Colts already have a Miami WR that's worked out pretty damn awesome.

Dale Moss, WR. Draft Sleeper (not sure where he'd go). 6'3" 4.38 40 time

Round 2 I'd like for the Colts to look C (if Konz somehow falls), OG or OT. There are plenty of TE and WR to be had in the later rounds.

paulcareyjr
paulcareyjr

@AaronHuston There are plenty of centers in the draft as well, but like the receiving group they aren't as good of prospects. I really don't have a problem with us drafting Knoz by the way, but I think it all depends on who is available at that point.

paulcareyjr
paulcareyjr

I personally would take Poe before any of them if he fell that far, but I think he will be gone in the top 16 picks. His potential is higher than any of the guys on the list to me, including Fleener. I also would like to add the more and more I think about it, I would not be surprised if the Colts drafted Dwayne Allen in the 2nd, even though his 40 was not as good, he is a wonderful blocker, and knows how to run good routes and has good hand. He may not have the speed that Fleener has, but his importance to a team could be extremely useful, especially on run plays.

paulcareyjr
paulcareyjr

Something I would like to add about Allen, he is very versatile, and could be used in Y banana plays, lol, from the FB position. I would rather the Colts trade back if Fleener is not available though, allow them to get more value for the pick and grab Allen a little later.

Some additions I would consider (if I may be so bold):

Fringe 1st / Round 2 Prospects:

Kendall Wright Baylor WR

Alfonzo Dennard Nebraska CB

Shea McClellin Boise State OLB

Fringe 2nd / Round 3 Prospects:

Amini Silatolu Midwestern State OG

Josh Chapman Alambama NT*

Jayron Hosley CB

George Iloka Bosie State FS**

Fringe 3rd / Round 4 Prospects:

Casey Hayward Vanderbilt CB

Joe Adams Arkansas WR

Orson Charles Georgia TE

Fringe 4th / Round 5 Prospects:

Nicolas Jean-Baptiste Baylor NT

* Played Last 8 Games of the season with a torn ACL. Arguably the best run stuffer coming out this year.

** Surprisingly quick and rangy for 6' 3"

paulcareyjr
paulcareyjr

@MinneapolisColt Wright will be gone in the 1st for sure, Dennard will probably he in the 2nd group, McClelin would be interesting, would allow us to have a rotation, and be a replacement for Freeney next year.

Chapman is probably a 4th possibly 5th round guy, Hosley, would a good value as a 3rd round pick I think, Iloka would be decent depending on how he can play SS, he is a bigger guy so he might be able to fill that role. I think you also have to look into his agility especially in man to man coverage.

Adams would be a interesting pick, I think he would be a slot though moving Collie outside, which is not out of the question, but I would rather get a guy that plays out on the wing.

MinneapolisColt
MinneapolisColt

@paulcareyjr

I agree that Wright probably won't be there, but either Wright or Fleener could drop to where it could make sense to trade up. In regards to Chapman, I think if we wanted him we couldn't wait until the 4th round. He is the one true NT in the top 100 or so picks. I'd rather take him in the third than a DT in the second like Worthy and hope he can transition to nose. I agree with you on Adams.

I'd put Josh Norman on your board as well.

coltsauthority

Sounds good. I will be updating it and I'll probably update my mock as well. I picked Ta'amu in the 2nd because I didn't really think anyone would be available at NT until later. I'll take a close look at Norman and I'll try to figure something out that I think is realistic and best for the team. @Lvl9LightSpell

I would prefer taking Fleener (if available) or Hill well over Ta'amu or Poe. Luck is going to need some bigger (and just more) targets, and these are some of the best in the draft (short of the top-tier likely to go early first). Jeffery would be another good target, but I'd prefer a bit quicker/taller than stronger of a receiver and feel they're comparable otherwise.

chad72
chad72

A few guys I would like to add to the above list:

CB - Casey Hayward, Vanderbilt - everytime he went against the best in the SEC, he always shined. A ballhawk who is one of the most underrated CBs in this draft, he has an Asante Samuel like ceiling without the bad tackling :).

WR - Jarius Wright, Arkansas - has the speed, plus has the route running, plus has the hands - more polished than Joe Adams, does not have the production of Greg Childs because of the time share he ran into with the other Arkansas wideouts being present as well. Fits the profile of speedy Bruce Arians wideouts.

NT - Hebron Fangupo, BYU - 6'1", 323 lbs - transfer from USC. Between Oct. 2010 and Dec. 2011, BYU allowed only one 100 yard rusher and he was in the middle when it all happened. Has played both 3-4 NT and 3-4 DE in BYU's 3-4 scheme. Add him to the legacy of Samoan tackles in the NFL :).

OG - Kevin Zeitler, Wisconsin - 6'4", 314 - if he gets past the Ravens at No.29, he could very well be BPA at No.34. While Satele was a former round 2 pick and seems like the center for the immediate future thus probably ruling out Peter Konz, Kevin Zeitler fills a position of greater need at OG.

shastamasta

@chad72 I think Jarius Wright would be a great grab in the 5th round. He has the elite speed to be a Mike Wallace type WR in Arians' offense. I would love to see the Colts grab a big, athletic WR in rounds 2-4 and then grab Wright in the 5th.

@chad72

Janoris Jenkins, CB, of North Alabama is scheduled to meet with the Colts:

https://twitter.com/#%21/StampedeBlue/status/188708261095153664

Yep, I dont think we will shy away from trouble makers as much as in the past, IMO.

Janoris Jenkins is first round talent, has an Asante Samuel like ceiling, and has Antonio Cromartie like questions, coming out of the draft, IMO

I remember OmahaColt commenting that no way that Janoris Jenkins would be on the Colts list when I put him in my mock. Better think twice now :)

@chad72 i dont see the colts drafting him. kicking the tires isnt a bad idea i guess. he wont be a colt

paulcareyjr
paulcareyjr

@omahacolt @chad72 Yeah, I think his interviewing really helped him, and even though his tape was not as good this year, when he was at FLA he really played at an extremely high level. It will be interesting to see where this guy goes, he could definitely slip to the 2nd round but some believe he is the best man to man corner in the draft.

TrueBlue87
TrueBlue87

I'm a little surprised by the lack of O-linemen on the list. I wouldn't be surprised to see a mid-round guard. There is also a tackle I particularly like, Mitchell Schwartz from Cal. He played left tackle for the Golden Bears, but has the potential to be a GREAT right tackle in the NFL. He had a fantastic Senior Bowl and really shined in the one-on-one drills. Right now, he's project early third round.

Oh, and I keep saying it and I will continue to say it: I'm not wild about Poe or Ta'amu. I think there are better developmental NT prospects in the late rounds.

Westhoff
Westhoff

@TrueBlue87 Considering the FO moves on OL made so far this offseason, I'd be surprised if they end up drafting a OL before the 6th round (if at all).

TrueBlue87
TrueBlue87

@Westhoff It depends on how you interpret the moves. McGlynn and Justice aren't starting caliber players, they're depth. Only Satale is a starter. Improvements can still be made.

Payton
Payton

@TrueBlue87 @Westhoff Getting an offensive line together is important, but I think it takes a back seat to acquiring more targets for Luck or beefing up the secondary. If there are really no appropriate DBs or or WR/TE available at 65, then I'd absolutely go with Schwartz.
QBs can make up for deficiencies on the line , but they need weapons to do it. The secondary needs to improve so it can give the offense more chances to generate points.

TrueBlue87
TrueBlue87

@Westhoff But you can't just draft for need, you have to draft value. This is a bad tight end class outside of Fleener and Allen. But, this is a good class for guards, wide receivers and cornerbacks. It's also pretty decent for tackles through the first three rounds.

While I think Ijalana CAN play right tackle, I also think you don't shy away from one in the draft. Like I mentioned above, I love Mitchell Schwartz. Absolutely dominant during Senior Bowl week and had no problem with the best rushers in the class. He played LT for Cal but has the potential to be an All-Star RT in the NFL and should be there at pick 65.

Westhoff
Westhoff

@TrueBlue87 I assume there's 3 positions set already.... Costanzo (LT), Reitz (LG), and Satele (C)... which leaves RT open for Ijalana, Linkenbach, and Justice and RG open for Ijalana (if he loses RT), McGlynn, S Olsen, or any other bum.

Its a piece-mail line like you say but there's depth which spurs competition which can drive guys to play to their potential. Unless they use a high pick (3rd or above) I don't see where any one in the draft is going to offer better value than what they already have. It seems to me that the big of needs at QB, TE, WR, & CB takes presidence in the early rounds.

paulcareyjr
paulcareyjr

@TrueBlue87 @Westhoff yeah, the line we have is kind a temporary one, I could see us targeting at least a C/G in this draft at some point, Justice I think can be a starting caliber player, but he just did not show it last year, but had before then. He is still young so he should have many years ahead of him, but his contract is up after the season so we probably won't resign him unless he has a really good year, a tleast that is my thought. McGlynn, yeah he will probably be gone, don't really have many high hopes for him.

LovinBlue
LovinBlue moderator

@TrueBlue87 Well it's certainly hard for me to argue against a player from Cal!

smonroe
smonroe

@TrueBlue87 I think Poe will be around in the 2nd because after the combine the scouts went back and realized the guy wasn't as good a player as he was a workout stud. But I hope we don't take him. I'd rather have Fleener. And the 34th pick is pretty early for Ta'amu IMHO but he'd be a great #3.

Love some of your later picks, and if we were to replace AV Bullock would be a great choice.

paulcareyjr
paulcareyjr

@smonroe @TrueBlue87 I don't think there is any chance Poe is around at that spot. There is a lot that goes into drafting, and when defensive coaches see all that h has for them to mold they get extremely excited. People knew his tape was so-so before the combine, but he was even a fringe first rounder then. I think that he has a ton to offer a team, and in no way is a finished product.

I can understand that surprise. When my story comes out on Monday going over the "don't be surprised" segment on offense, hopefully the reason why will be made clear. @TrueBlue87
